Queensbury Civil War Soldiers Monument

“…and what about that Eagle?”

If you have ever been in the town hall, you have most likely seen it…a large, imposing granite raptor greets you when you at the entrance. What you might not know is that there is a story behind this piece. The Eagle was crafted from New Brunswick Dorchester sandstone and sculpted by John Townsend of South Britain Connecticut to grace the top of the first Queensbury Civil War monument located at the intersection of Glen and Bay streets.

The Eagle Story…

Local resident Harriet Wing lost two sons to the Civil War. Her donation of $150 to the Ladies Patriotic Association was the beginning of a project that produced an impressive and enduring monument to the legacy of those brave 644+ Queensbury men who volunteered to serve.
